Carton Tape Wrapping: Keep Shipping Labels Clear | Keepway

A ring-type tape wrapper carries adhesive tape around a carton. Before choosing the wrapping position, mark where the shipping label will sit on the finished box. A label that looks clear before wrapping may end up beneath the tape band or its overlap.

For a machine enquiry, send the carton and the label layout together. The decision is practical: can the required closure and an unobstructed label coexist on every carton format, in the orientation used at the packing station?

Clear tape still needs a clear label area

Do not treat transparent tape as permission to wrap over a shipping label. FedEx’s package-labeling guidance explains that reflections from tape can make a barcode difficult to scan, including when the tape is transparent. Follow the requirements for your own carrier and service. FedEx label guidance

Barcode placement also belongs in the packaging design. GS1 identifies obstruction by packaging, wrinkles, contrast and the clear areas around symbols as relevant quality checks. Preserve the approved label layout rather than shrinking it to fit the space left after wrapping. GS1 barcode-quality guidance

Draw the complete tape route on the filled carton

Start with photographs of the actual closed, filled box. Mark:

  • The flap seam and any separate seam-sealing tape.
  • Each proposed ring-tape band, including a second direction if required.
  • The full shipping-label outline, its barcode and surrounding clear area.
  • Any other markings or documents that must remain visible.
  • The face presented to the machine and the orientation at dispatch.

Show the band’s width, not just a thin line through its centre. Use the tape width proposed for the equipment. If the carton must be turned for another band, show that second pass on the same drawing. Check the smallest carton as well as the largest; the available label area changes with the box format.

Keep the closure requirement intact. Moving tape away from a label is only useful if the revised wrap still meets the agreed packaging requirement. Where the two areas conflict, review label position, packing sequence or carton format with the relevant suppliers.

Decide when the label is applied

Label before wrapping: demonstrate the complete route with the label already attached. Check whether positioning variation or a second pass brings tape over the label. A pre-wrap scan does not establish the condition after wrapping.

Label after wrapping: reserve a suitable exposed carton surface and identify who applies the label. Include this task and the final check in the station workflow. Do not assume that a ring wrapper includes a printer, label applicator or scanner.

For either sequence, document how the carton is presented. A photo of an acceptable finished box should show its orientation and all required tape bands, so operators and equipment suppliers are reviewing the same arrangement.

Trial the arrangement you intend to buy

Review the Keepway KPW-3040 carton tape wrapping machine with your actual carton, tape and label samples, and confirm the quoted configuration. Cross-taping does not establish automatic carton turning; include any reorientation and label-handling steps in the demonstration.

Agree a small trial matrix before the run:

Smallest normal carton

Full label fits in the reserved area without tape covering its information

Largest normal carton

Label remains on the intended face through loading and collection

Carton requiring a second tape direction

Both bands leave the required label area clear

A different printed carton or label layout

The approved layout still fits; previous approval is not assumed

Record the carton format, tape identification, wrap count, label layout, application sequence and photographs of the finished result. Note rejected packs and their causes. Test the agreed receiving scanner on the finished carton and retain the result with the sample record. If your customer requires formal barcode verification, specify that separately; an ordinary scan check does not establish a quality grade. GS1’s verification explanation distinguishes scanning from grading symbol quality.

Send one marked carton photo to start the review

Send filled dimensions and weight, the tape specification, required bands and turns, an anonymized label example, and the planned loading, turning and label-application sequence. Include the carrier or customer requirements you need the finished pack to meet.

Request a carton wrapping configuration review. If the open question is tape adhesion rather than label clearance, use the separate carton and tape compatibility checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Can a ring tape wrapper apply clear tape over the barcode?

Plan the wrap to keep the shipping-label information uncovered. Transparency does not remove the reflection issue described in FedEx’s guidance. Confirm your carrier’s instructions for the service used.

Should I label the carton before or after tape wrapping?

Choose a sequence that leaves the label clear on the completed carton. If the label is attached first, trial every tape pass with it in place. If it is attached afterwards, reserve the label area and include application and checking in the workflow.

Does the KPW-3040 automatically turn the box for cross-taping?

Do not assume that from a cross-taped example. Confirm the carton-turning arrangement and the operator’s tasks for the configuration quoted.

Can the same layout be used for every carton size?

Approve each relevant format. A smaller carton, another tape direction or a revised label can create a conflict that was absent on the first sample.
