Tape Lifting on Recycled or Printed Cartons? Check the Material Pair Before Buying a Machine
A carton can look sealed at the packing station and show lifted tape later. Before changing the machine or adding more wraps, test your actual tape and filled carton together. The useful result is an agreed acceptance record, with the materials and conditions identified.
Request a carton and tape compatibility review

Why the same tape can behave differently on a new carton
Recycled corrugated surfaces can vary in texture, fibres and coatings, which can affect tape adhesion. Box stiffness also matters during application. These material variables are described in 3M's guidance on sealing recycled corrugate. A recycled-content statement alone does not identify a suitable tape-and-carton combination.
Printed areas introduce another surface to evaluate. Send a complete carton and indicate where the tape crosses ink, coatings, corners or a flap joint. A clean sample panel is useful, but it does not replace testing the filled box in its packing orientation.
1. Identify the materials before comparing machines
| Record | What to provide | Why it belongs in the enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Carton | Supplier and lot, board specification if available, external L × W × H, filled weight, photos of the tape contact area | Separates a size or surface change from a machine change |
| Tape | Supplier, exact SKU, adhesive and backing if known, width, core size, outer roll diameter and technical data sheet | Allows both material suitability and feed-path compatibility to be reviewed |
| Environment | Storage and application conditions, expected transport conditions, any cold or humid stage | Supports a trial that resembles the proposed use |
| Failure | Where lifting begins, when it appears, dated photos, whether the carton is filled and whether the flap opens | Defines the problem more precisely than “weak tape” |
2. Separate the tape path from the adhesion question
If the requirement is tape along the upper and lower centre seams of a carton, start with a carton tape sealing machine. If the requirement is a band around the carton, review a ring-type carton tape wrapping machine. Mark the intended path on a photograph, including whether a second direction is required.
For the KPW-3040, the currently confirmed reference carton footprint is 300 × 400 mm, length × width. This is not a confirmed maximum or minimum range. Provide box height and the complete size list for a fit review. Do not infer automatic turning, folding or feeding from a finished cross-taped carton.
3. Run a controlled comparison with your samples
- Agree the acceptance points. Define the tape path, overlap or end treatment, acceptable edge condition, flap closure and observations after storage or handling. Agree the sample count and observation intervals with the packaging team; there is no universal pass threshold in this checklist.
- Label each combination. Use carton lot and tape SKU identifiers. Keep the filled weight, carton preparation and application conditions comparable. Change one material variable at a time where practical.
- Check machine application separately. Record feed interruptions, cuts, tape placement, carton deformation and rework. Use the supplier-approved setup procedure; do not compensate for poor adhesion by bypassing guards or increasing force outside the specified setup.
- Inspect beyond the first minute. Record the initial result and the agreed later observation. For route-specific storage or transport requirements, agree a suitable packaging test with your packaging specialist.
- Keep the failed samples. Label photos and samples so the tape supplier and equipment supplier can review the same evidence.
4. Use a short record that the quotation can reference
A machine trial can verify handling and application under the recorded conditions. It does not by itself establish shelf life, shipping performance on every route, or a guaranteed reduction in tape use. Compare accepted cartons over the same observation window, and include stoppages and material changes. For mixed-size production, also use the carton sealer changeover trial checklist.
Changing to paper or recycled-content tape?
Specify the exact proposed product. Backing and adhesive choices differ between tape products, as illustrated by tesa's packaging tape material guidance. Check its technical data sheet and application requirements with the tape supplier, then confirm roll fit, feeding, cutting and adhesion in the proposed machine configuration. Another supplier's material claim or certification does not certify the Keepway machine or the complete package.
Send a reviewable enquiry
Send filled carton dimensions and weight, the intended tape path, tape SKU and roll dimensions, photos of lifting or damage, target accepted output and destination utilities. Include your name, company and reply email in the product enquiry form so we can discuss the application. Samples and final configuration are agreed before an equipment commitment.
