Horizontal orbital wrapping moves packaging material around a product as it passes through the wrapping area. It is a useful equipment category to review for long profiles, pipes and similar goods. Start with the full product envelope

Measure the largest and smallest loads as they will actually be packed, including any pads, edge protectors or grouping fixtures. Record length, width, height, weight and the centre of support. Ring opening alone does not determine suitability: the conveyor, product supports and available clearance must be reviewed together.

• Long profiles and pipes: identify unsupported sections and the transfer between conveyors.
• Grouped items: explain how the bundle stays together before film is applied.
• Finished surfaces: state which areas may touch guides, belts or rollers.
• Mixed sizes: specify the changeover frequency and the setup tasks available to the operator.

Choose film overlap around the protection requirement

Describe whether the aim is to hold a bundle together, cover surfaces or prepare a product for another packing step. Ask the supplier to compare film type, width, tension and overlap on a sample load. A change in wrapping speed or conveyor speed also changes coverage, so evaluate the finished wrap together with throughput.

End protection and moisture protection depend on the complete packaging arrangement. Show any exposed ends, sharp edges and additional packing materials during the application review.

Define the automation boundary

Agree who loads and unloads the goods, how products enter the wrapping area and what happens during a film change. For an integrated line, confirm the upstream and downstream signals, conveyor interfaces and operating access. Request the safety provisions and electrical configuration for the proposed installation.

Compare alternatives before requesting a quotation

Send drawings or photographs, load dimensions and weight, the required hourly output, the available layout and destination power supply. Ask for a sample wrap and a configuration-specific quotation; use observed film consumption and cycle time when evaluating the proposal.
