Pallet Wrapper Top Platen: Agree Contact and Trial Acceptance Before Ordering

When a pallet load needs support during wrapping, a top platen may be worth reviewing. The buying decision is not complete until the load's top surface, allowed contact and trial result are defined for the proposed configuration.

Discuss my load and top-platen optionDownload the contact and trial brief

Separate three questions that often get combined

Can the machine carry it?

Confirm the complete loaded dimensions, total weight and approved operating envelope.

Can the load tolerate contact?

Identify the proposed contact area, fragile surfaces, uneven layers and any prohibited pressure.

Will the finished load meet your needs?

Agree wrapping observations and subsequent handling or transport checks separately.

A platen option does not increase the machine's rated capacity or turn an unsuitable stack into an approved one. If the load is already leaning, damaged or unsupported, review the pallet and stacking method first. Do not proceed on the assumption that pressing down will solve the problem.

For the broader choice between rotating and stationary loads, use our heavy and unstable pallet assessment. This guide addresses the more specific handover between the packaging buyer, the product owner and the equipment supplier when top contact is being proposed.

Mark what the top platen may touch

Provide a photograph or drawing of the top layer and mark the proposed contact region. Identify open cartons, handles, caps, raised components, soft packs, sharp projections and surfaces that must remain unmarked. Show whether the top is flat, stepped or incomplete.

Ask the product or packaging owner to state any permitted contact or compression limit and how it was established. If no limit is known, record that uncertainty and request a sample assessment. Do not choose a force setting from another customer's video or a generic web specification.

A protective sheet, support board or different stack arrangement may change the contact conditions. If one is proposed, include it in the trial and supplied-scope record. Specify who provides it, how it is positioned and whether every pallet will use it. This is an application review, not a claim that these accessories are included with the machine.

Include the shortest and most difficult loads

The tallest pallet is not always the hardest one to support. Record minimum and maximum loaded height, the top-layer layout, the loaded footprint and total weight for each relevant product family. A short load may need a different contact position from a tall one, while an uneven top may offer less suitable support than either.

Identify which loads may rotate and which require a different wrapping arrangement. Ask the supplier to confirm the platen's operating range and contact arrangement on the proposed drawing. A taller mast by itself does not establish that the top platen can reach or support every load in your range.

Keepway identifies KPW-T1650 as the standard pallet stretch wrapper and T1850 as a custom configuration. Turntable size, a top platen and mast height can be reviewed for customization. The T1850 name does not by itself specify a diameter, contact force, working height or increased load rating; those belong in the agreed configuration.

Agree a supervised trial with observable results

Use representative products, the intended pallet, the proposed film and any agreed top support. Before the demonstration, define what will count as an acceptable pack and who can approve the product-contact result. Follow the supplied operating and safety instructions; settings and adjustments should be handled by qualified personnel for that equipment.

Before wrappingRecord the stack condition, top surface and existing marks.
During the cycleObserve load movement and contact behaviour from a safe position.
After releaseInspect cartons, surfaces, layers and film for the agreed defects.
During handlingComplete the separate handling checks required for the application.

Record displaced layers, crushed edges, surface marks, film breaks and any pack held for review. Keep the machine configuration, film specification and relevant settings with the result. If an adjustment is made, identify which condition changed and repeat the agreed observations rather than combining different trials into one claimed result.

Observe platen approach and release as well as the wrapping stage. Include positioning, operator work and unloading when measuring complete acceptable pallets per hour. A demonstration of a supported load during rotation is not, by itself, evidence that the load will remain stable through your distribution route.

Make the quotation describe the supplied option

Ask for the platen arrangement, accepted load range, required utilities, control sequence and installation dimensions to be identified in the quotation or approved drawing. Include any extra overhead space and access needed for installation and servicing. Use the loading-access checklist for the truck route, ramp and floor layout so these issues are not lost in the contact review.

Record the approved load combinations and exclusions. Keep the trial reference, drawing revision and open questions together. If the customer later changes pallet height, carton strength, top-layer arrangement, film or protective board, review whether the original acceptance still applies before routine use.

Prepare one load-and-contact brief

Send side and top photographs, loaded length × width × height, weight, the shortest and tallest loads, prohibited contact areas, and any known compression limits. Add your current wrapping problem, film details, loading method, target output and available site services.

Common buying questions

Is a top platen part of every standard wrapper?

No. Confirm the included equipment on the quotation; a photograph or a customization option does not define the standard supply.

Can we approve the option from load weight alone?

No. Weight, stability and permissible top contact are separate inputs. Include the load's construction and sample evidence.

Does a successful wrapping trial replace transport validation?

No. Keep the wrapping acceptance and the checks required for subsequent handling or transport distinct.
