Horizontal Flow Wrapping: Product & Film Selection

Horizontal flow wrapping forms film around a product, makes a longitudinal seal and separates individual packs through the end-sealing and cutting process. The resulting package is often called a pillow pack. In this context, “pillow” describes the package format. A project that requires compressing a bedding pillow or removing air needs its own equipment and process assessment.

Start with the product envelope

Collect the smallest and largest product dimensions, weight, shape and loading orientation. Explain whether the item holds its shape during feeding or needs support. If several products share a line, include the full size range and the expected frequency of changeovers.

Food and daily-product applications may have different handling and packaging requirements. A photograph gives useful context, but physical samples and the intended film provide a stronger basis for checking the final configuration.

Match the film and finished bag

Send the film material, width and roll specification together with an example of the required finished pack. For printed film, include the print layout and registration mark. Describe the intended seal appearance, opening method, bag length and any holes required in the pack.

Do not assume that one film setting works for every material. Material structure, product dimensions and the required seal affect the application review. Claims about recyclable, biodegradable or high-barrier film compatibility need to be checked against the specific film supplied.

Review the feeding process and target output

Describe how products reach the machine: individual manual placement, a conveyor or another upstream process. Explain the spacing, orientation and consistency of the incoming products, plus any handling needed after sealing.

Separate additional processes from the basic machine

If the project requires vacuum, gas flushing, product compression, coding or inspection, list each requirement separately. Specify the purpose, upstream equipment and expected output. These functions should be confirmed in the proposed configuration and quotation; they should not be assumed from the term “flow wrapper”.

Food preservation results also depend on the product, packaging materials and process conditions. A machinery description alone is not evidence of a particular shelf life.

• Product photos or samples, dimensions, weight and orientation.
• Minimum and maximum product sizes across the intended range.
• Film material, roll width, printed mark and desired bag style.
• Target output and the proposed loading and discharge arrangement.
• Local voltage, frequency and phase, plus available installation space.
• Any separate requirements for vacuum, gas handling, coding, inspection or compression.
